10 Moving Tips For Winter
Moving in New England winter conditions
Moving in the winter? Today is our first day of true New England snow and a good time to discuss the challenges of a winter move in NH and MA. Snow, ice, cold and rain all make moving much more difficult. Here are 10 winter moving tips to make your local or long distance relocation go much smoother.
- Try to review all of the moving, packing, preparing and helpful hint brochures, that your diggins & ROSE moving consultant has provided to you.
- Make sure to arrange to have your driveway and walkways plowed and sanded at both ends of your move. Moving vans require a wider turning radius than a passenger vehicle does; make the driveway entrance as wide as you can. The more snow we get, the narrower the driveways and corners become.
- If you have items located in a lower level that can't be moved out of your residence via the inside stairs and have to be removed from an exit at the rear of your residence, shovel a path at least three (3) feet wide to the area where our moving crew will load your other belongings. Make sure to sand that walkway as well. If that area is muddy, you will have to lay down some plywood or planks (movers do not have these materials on their vans).
- Moving vans cannot maneuver on ice or frozen snow, so sand everything. Otherwise your move out, or your move into your new residence, will go a lot slower and could create a problem for the folks that are scheduled to move in.
- Do not pack or allow anything that is liquid to be loaded - remove all of those items. Liquids can freeze and the contents could damage your personal belongs when the container expands and breaks.
- Loading and unloading in the winter will take longer than it would normally take in milder temperatures and conditions, so plan accordingly.
- Make sure to take a shovel, and some sand or salt with you to your new location, so that you can prepare your new residence for the moving crew.
- Allow yourself plenty of time to travel to your new residence.
- Our van operator will provide you with his cell phone number and he will ask for your cell phone number, so that you can both keep in touch during transit portion of your move.
-
Finally, enjoy the experience! All diggins & ROSE moving personnel have attended our mandatory "Quality Labor Training Program" and they know how to pack and handle your belongings so that everything arrives safely in your new home.
