How to Move Plasma and LCD Televisions
Moving flat screen TV's, including LDC and Plasma televisions, requires special care. Due to their extremely high value and susceptibility to damage, proper packing and handling are top priorities.
Moving LCD and Plasma TV's: Packing a flat screen television
Although there are significant differences in the technology of LCD televisions and Plasma televisions, the manufacturers' recommended handling procedures are similar:
- Your LCD or Plasma television upright should remain in an upright position at all times. It should never be laid flat or on its side.
- Manufacturers recommend covering the screen with a soft cloth (to prevent scratching).
- If you saved the original packing materials that came with your TV, this is the least expensive and best option, as the inserts that came with your original packaging will be sized exactly to your television.
- If you do not have the original packing materials and your TV is under 60", you can purchase a special flat screen TV kit made just for this purpose from your moving company or follow the directions below.
- Making your own TV packing kit: First you must obtain a roomy carton or crate big enough to hold the TV plus packing materials. Styrofoam (3" - 4" thick) should be placed at each of the four corners allowing the unit to be elevated inside the carton or crate. It should not be placed directly on the cardboard or wood crate bottom. Additional Styrofoam (2" -3" thick) should be placed on the screen as well as the backside of the unit.
- If you are not comfortable with packing your flat screen TV yourself your United agent can pack your flat screen TV properly for you.
- If your flat screen TV is larger than 60", flat screen TV kits will not be large enough. Your United agent diggins & ROSE will construct a custom crate for these larger televisions.
Moving your Plasma or LCD Television: During Transportation
LCD or Plasma televisions should always be loaded upright. Please remember LCD or Plasma televisions must never be laid flat, even when they are placed in the original packing container or crate. Damage could occur if the television is not kept in an upright position.
Although it may seem obvious, always keep in mind that LCD and Plasma televisions should not be exposed to rain, moisture, excessive dues, direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.
Storing your LCD or Plasma TV
A climate-controlled environment is the general recommendation for storing an LCD or Plasma television in view of the facts that both are sensitive to extreme temperatures and humidity. diggins & ROSE offers climate-controlled storage in the NH and MA area.
If you plan long-term storage, contact the manufacturer for instructions and obtain long-term recommendations for specific LCD and Plasma television makes and models.
Moving your LCD or Plasma TV: At Your Destination
Unless you packed your flat screen television yourself, it is recommended that the uncrating and set up be done by a qualified third party company with you, the owner, being present at that time to inspect the process. If you move is handled through United Van Lines, they offer a fabulous program that includes Geek Squad setting up your TV or home entertainment center along with a whole host of other valuable extra services at attrvery active rates through Straight Talk Advantage packages.
Factory service dealers recommend that the plasma units be allowed to "set" for a period of time (several hours) before being turned on.
