Moving Your Electronics Safely

Before moving electronics, there are certain procedures to follow which will protect your systems from mechanical failure or damage due to normal physical shock, which can occur during transport. If the moving tips below are followed prior to moving, your electronics should arrive safely at destination.

Moving Tips for Electronics:

  • Remember to remove all CDs and DVDs from your computer and players before packing. Remove all paper from your printers and/or fax machines.
  • Make sure all CDs and DVDs are back in their cases. Pack all CDs, DVDs and software together marking the box appropriately.
  • If you don't have the owner's manual, draw a diagram of the wiring PRIOR TO disconnection. Place the diagram in the box in an envelope marked "Wiring Diagram".
  • Some electronics have a transport screw under, in back of, or on the side of the unit. Tighten before packing.
  • Remove any stacker or multi-play cartridges prior to packing, and wrap individually.
  • Close trays on Players and Computer Tower.

Packing Electronics for Moving: Boxes to use

The best way to move your electronics is in the original box with the original packing. In the event that you do not have the original box and/or packing, use a box big enough to cover the entire unit with enough room for packing material. The packing material should snugly fill the excess room in the box so that the unit will not move around.

Plastic bubble wrap makes an ideal packing material. Try to stay away from using newspaper. Seal the box with reliable packing tape. Your moving company can provide you with proper packing containers and materials if needed. Diggins & ROSE offers discounted moving boxes and supplies through our Moving Boxes web page.

Packing Remotes, Cords and Manuals

Make sure that your remote controls are wrapped separately and packed in the same box with your electronics. All wiring/cords should go into the same box. Your owner's manual should be packed in the same box, unless you are packing a box of JUST owner manuals.
